Valerie earned a B.S. from the University of Arizona in Tucson in 1974, graduating Phi Beta Kappa, and an additional B.S. and Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine from the University of Illinois in 1978.

From 1978 to 1982 she worked as a veterinarian and Chief of Staff at the Emergency Animal Clinic of San Diego.  For the next twenty years she was co-owner and operator of the La Jolla Veterinary Hospital.

After Dr. Ewell sold her interest in the hospital she parlayed her rich experience as a business owner to provide financial advisory services to small business owners and individuals. She then formally pursued her interest in financial planning and investment strategy by completing a rigorous course and national board exam toward the Certified Financial Planner™ certificate through the Denver-based College for Financial Planning and UCLA.  She has also successfully completed the examination to become a Registered Investment Advisor with the State of California.

Valerie joined WheelerFrost in 2011. 

Valerie was raised in Illinois and has lived in California since 1978.  She has been actively involved in San Diego civic and professional organizations through many boards and advisory groups.  She lives in La Jolla with her husband of twenty five years, Charlie Ewell, and two dogs, a cat, and a bird.
